SHILLONG, Jan 28 – A Guwahati bound night super bus from Silchar plunged into a 40 metre gorge near Mawblei, near the city this morning, killing three passengers. Thirty-five others were critically injured.
The mishap occurred at around 4.30 am today when the bus AS-01-CC-4009 skidded off the road and plunged into the gorge in the accident prone area. According to preliminary report, the brakes of the bus failed. The driver has been identified as Loket Sharma from Manipur and was found to be under the influence of alcohol. However, the second driver managed to escape and a hunt is on to nab him.
The deceased were identified as Balram Chaudhury from Itanagar, Bilharuddin Barbhuiya from Cachar, Assam and Gopal Barma from Nalbari.
The injured have been shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital and many of the injured are stated to be in a critical condition, some undergoing surgery. Most of the injuries were of the head, chest and leg. Miraculously, four children who were in the bus escaped with only minor injuries.
According to the police, there were about 41 passengers in the bus, including the driver and the conductor. A police official said that the bus was on its way after making a halt in the area for passengers to alight.
“After the bus took off, it lost control and tumbled into the gorge,” the police official said.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that the injured were being provided medical care at the Shillong Civil Hospital and the situation is being monitored.
Some paramilitary personnel, who were travelling in the bus, have been shifted to the Shillong Military Hospital and a city based hospital.
