Dr Debo Prasad Barooah’s death widely condoled

 GUWAHATI, Jan 28 – The demise of academician, litterateur and former VC of Gauhati University Dr Debo Prasad Barooah was widely mourned in the State today. Held in reverence for his Leftist ideals and nationalism, his death has cast a pall of gloom in the intellectual circle.

Governor of Assam JB Patnaik, while conveying his deep sorrow over the news, said that the State has lost a great educationist and social worker. He extended his sympathies to Barooah’s bereaved family.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, in a statement, recalled the contributions of Dr Barooah and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided to keep its flag at half-mast for three days as a mark of sorrow. The student body adjourned its central executive meeting as soon as the news of demise of Dr Barooah came in. The student body said that Dr Barooah, who guided it during the Assam Agitation, was always ready to pave the way through his intellectual abilities.

“We are speechless with grief. Dr Barooah was a man who was always ready to help the indigenous communities and his demise is a great loss for the State,” said AASU.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) will hold condolence meetings across the State tomorrow and keep its flag at half-mast. Describing Dr Barooah’s death as a great loss to the State, the AJYCP said that its heartfelt sympathies were with the family at this hour.

On the other hand, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) held a condolence meet at its head office today and said Dr Barooah had always supported its people’s movements and that the masses will always remember him.

The Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) also conveyed its sorrow over the demise of Dr Barooah.

Former VC of Gauhati University, Dr Hiralal Duwarah, also expressed his grief and said that all former VCs will miss this distinguished colleague who had a great role in giving vibrancy to both academic and social life. Praying for peace of the departed soul, Dr Duwarah said that his sympathies were with the family members at this moment of sorrow.
