GUWAHATI, Jan 27 – A glass fibre bust of renowned historian and litterateur Dr Surya Kumar Bhuyan was unveiled on the campus of his SK Bhuyan Road residence here by former Asam Sahitya Sabha president Kanak Sen Deka this morning. Today was the 118 th birth anniversary of Dr Bhuyan.
Unveiling the bust, Kanak Sen Deka said Dr Bhuyan was the man who brought to light many unknown aspects of Assam history. He also penned the most acclaimed biography of noted Sanskrit scholar of Assam Anundoram Borooah and retrieved the life history of the legendary Assamese general Lachit Barphukan.
On the occasion, a write-up by Dilip Kumar Kakati on the State’s Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies (DHAS) and its building – the Narayani Handique Bhawan – was also read out. The DHAS was set up in 1928 and its building was inaugurated on April 4, 1936.
In his presidential address, veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakravartty said Dr Bhuyan brought to light the events of at least 1,300 years of Assam history. He showed the people of the State the way towards shaping their outlook in agreement with the modern age.
