Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jan 25 - Security measures have been beefed up in Manipur in view of the Republic Day boycott called by various insurgent outfits.

Patrolling was being carried out in different places of the valley districts particularly in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishenpur. As part of the security measures, all zonal officers have been asked to intensify patrolling in their respective areas before and after the march past on Republic Day and the public have been urged to walk outside the barricade along the footpath in an orderly manner.

Armed and unarmed security personnel have been deployed at strategic locations in and around Imphal particularly the Kangla fort and 1st battalion Manipur Rifles parade ground where the main functions of Republic Day celebration are scheduled to be held.

Insurgent groups operating in North East have jointly announced a boycott of Republic Day celebration by calling a “total shutdown” in the region on January 26.

PTI adds: Elaborate security arrangements have been made for Republic Day celebrations here tomorrow with foot patrolling and mobile squads of police on the guard in Aizawl.

Security was beefed up at important government offices and vital installations, while the Assam Rifles Ground, where the main function would be held, was swept by bomb disposal squad, district SP Lalhuliana Fanai said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range) LT Hrangchal said that though there was no specific threat report, all district SPs were instructed to step up vigil.

“We also instructed policemen deployed in border areas to intensify patrol in sensitive areas,” Hrangchal said.
