Certain areas in Dispur declared ‘protected’

 GUWAHATI, Jan 25 - In view of the forthcoming session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the administration has declared certain areas around the Assembly and the State Secretariat as ‘Protected Area’ from January 27 and till further order.

In an order issued by today Dr M Angamuthu, District Magistrate of Kamrup Metro, certain specified areas have been put under this category to regulate the entry of unauthorised persons into the areas specified.

The areas are the southern side of the GS Road starting from Ganeshguri Flyover up to Super Market Police Point, the 60-feet road starting from Super Market Police Point to Last Gate, from Last Gate along the RP Road up to the entry point of the Assembly, and from Ganesh Mandir up to Ganeshguri Chariali.

As per the order, issued under the Assam Maintenance of Public Order Act 1947, barring bonafide residents and public servants of the Assam Secretariat and other offices, only persons having permission of the District Magistrate or any officer duly authorised by him on his behalf or the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, or Secretary, Assam Legislative Assembly or an officer duly authorised by him would be allowed to enter the specified areas till further notice starting from January 27.

Meanwhile, the City Police has imposed prohibitory orders in the six police station areas under the East Police District of Guwahati.

“... some specified and unspecified persons or groups of persons or organisation/association are likely to disturb normal functioning of offices, movement of public and flow of traffic in parts of East Police District, Guwahati, and it is apprehended that such groups of persons or organisations/associations are planning to carry out agitation/demonstration/shouting of slogans in parts of East Police District, Guwahati, which may cause breach of peace and public order and may cause disturbance/interruption of peaceful movement of public, traffic and also normal functioning of offices in the above mentioned area... it is necessary to take preventive measures to ensure peaceful movement of public, smooth flow of traffic and normal functioning of offices in the above mentioned area,” said an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Police District, Guwahati.

“... under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973... do hereby prohibit assembly of more than five persons, agitation, demonstration and procession and shouting slogans in the entire East Police District, Guwahati, covering Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri police station areas under it without prior permission from competent authority,” it added.
