AIZAWL, Jan 20 - Mizoram’s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), will organise a State-wide public rally on January 23 to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
MZP general secretary, Lalnunmawia Pautu said that the decision was taken based on the instruction of North Eastern Students’ Organisation (NESO) to organise public rally by each constituent members in their respective States before January 30 against the controversial Bill.
“The executive meeting of MZP held on Friday agreed to hold a public rally across the State on January 23 against CAB and instructed all its affiliated student bodies to organise the same in their respective areas,” Pautu said. He also said that the effigies of the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister would be burnt during the rally.
There are eight student bodies affiliated to MZP. The student bodies are Mara Students’ Organisation, Lai Students’ Association, Hmar Students’ Association, Mizoram Bawm Students’ Association, Thado Kuki Students’ Union, etc.
Meanwhile, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) said it will write to the Rajya Sabha chairman against the CAB.
A statement issued by PRISM said that its central committee on Friday agreed to write a letter appealing to the House not to table the controversial Bill in its next session. The statement also said that the party would organise any form of agitation on Republic Day to demonstrate its opposition to the Bill.
