NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Jan 20 – The centenary celebration of North Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School kicked off on Monday with tributes being paid to its founders and deceased teachers and students while felicitating hundreds of prominent former students and citizens.
The festivities began with the hoisting of the centenary flag by the Principal of the school Anupama Deori Bharali and secretary of the organizsing committee. A tree plantation drive was taken out by the teachers of the school on the occasion inside the campus. This was followed by swahid tarpan led by Padma Sharma Baruah.
A hundred flags symbolising 100 years of the school were unfurled on the occasion by hundred prominent persons who were once alumni of the school. Several prominent citizens, including local MLA Utpal Dutta, former MLA Ghana Buragohain, ex-Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and Education Minister Premo Borah, besides head of the institutes of several academic institutes of North Lakhimpur, retired principals and teachers of the schools and alumnus were felicitated on the occasion.
A public meeting was subsequently held where the president of the centenary celebration committee, Hemen Gogoi delivered the objectives of the year-long programme. Alumni Brajen Sharma Baruah, retired Principal of Lakhimpur Commerce College delivered the keynote address. Cultural functions like chorus presentation, Borgeet and Satriya dance were also performed on the occasion.
