Senior administration officials said that illegal encroachments in the area had taken serious proportions and it has led to relative disappearance of the Bahini river in the area, resulting in water-logging and artificial flooding in the area during monsoon season.
With an aim to mitigate the problem, the district administration has decided to remove the barriers as well as to dredge the river and widen it. The eviction exercise is the first part of the initiative.
Many illegal structures were demolished during today's drive and an area of over 800 metres was freed from encroachment.
Officials from Dispur Circle Office, along with Basistha police, participated in the drive. Officials said the drive will continue.
