SILCHAR, Jan 17 - A Centre of Excellence of Earthquake Disaster Mitigation (CEEDM) will be set up at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here in collaboration with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Speaking to The Assam Tribune on the sidelines of a seven-day workshop on earthquake disaster mitigation under TEQIP-III at the Institute on Wednesday, Dr Nitesh A, faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering of the institute and coordinator of the workshop, said, “We wish to promote academic, research and educational exchanges and NIT Silchar and ASDMA have come to terms and formalised a MoU in setting up the centre for excellence here. The agreement will be signed on January 17 in the presence of Director, NIT Silchar and officials from the Cachar district administration.”
Elaborating about the centre, Dr Nitesh and Dr Arjun Sil, another coordinator, said the centre will offer regular training to practising engineers, including ones at PWD, facilitate collaborative research activities required for the State and also for the region, data sharing policies for research and inspection for analysing pre and post-earthquake disaster activities.
“As per the agreement, the two agencies will work for collaborative research. We will also reach out to the builders and people from the industry and attempt to understand their requirement and address the issues on earthquake safety, causes for landslides and other measures,” the coordinators maintained.
Noted experts including Prof AK Singh from IIT Guwahati, Dr S Baruah from CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat and other dignitaries attended the inaugural session of the workshop.
As many as 60 other participants from various institutes of the country took part in the workshop.
