Correspondent
BARPETA, Jan 17 - The 527th Ghuranaam was performed yesterday at Baniyakuchi Satra in the district with a daylong programme. People from the surrounding areas gathered on the satra premises from the morning and offered their prayers on the occasion of ‘Bardomahi’, the first day of Magh in the Assamese almanac. Recitation of the Bhagawat continued since morning amidst large gathering.

Devotees of the Satra performed naam at noon by moving around the naamghar seven times, which is called the Ghuranaam. It is an age-old tradition of the satra since its inception in 1492 AD. As per known traditions, Sri Sri Harideva was accorded a warm welcome in his first visit to the Satra on the 1st of Magh, 527 years back, and the devotees of the satra performed Ghuranaam on that occasion. Since then, Ghuranaam is celebrated on that day every year.

A huge gathering was also observed at Sadasiva Burha Gosai Than at Sutiapara in the district on the occasion of the Bardomahi. Traditional Maghi festival commenced today at Garashiya Gosai Than at Sarbhog in the district. It became a centre of attraction for the devotees and the visitors alike, which will continue for one month.

The traditional Maghar Domahi was observed at Barpeta Satra with full satriya tradition and religious fervour.
