Junbeel Mela gets under way

 JAGIROAD, Jan 17 - The famous Junbeel Mela got under way here today. The three-day Mela began at Junbeel Pathar, 4 km away from Jagiroad in Morigaon district. The mela began with hoisting of flag by Gova Tiwa Deo-raja-Deepsing, followed by lighting a lamp by Suneswar Doloi, president of the mela samiti. In his brief speech, Gova raja Deepsing appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony during the three-day event. The ceremonial ‘king’ of Gova Kingdom along with his court members namely Barbarua, Senapati, Deka-Doloi, Arandhara, Bordoloi, Khatoniar and others, Potonia king Bhadra Sing Deoraja assembled this afternoon at the Mela ground to attend a community feast which was also joined by a hosts of dignitaries from the tribe.

The Mela saw participation of people from the neighbouring States. Tomorrow, the people will exchange their essential items under traditional barter system, followed by ‘community fishing’.
