Student body demands release of arrested leaders

 BISWANATH CHARIALI, Jan 15 - The students of Biswanath College here submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Biswanath district on Saturday and demanded immediate release of Pragyan Saikia, president of Biswanath College Students’ Union, besides another student.

Earlier, the students of the college took out a procession to register protest against their leader’s arrest and marched up to the police point of Biswanath Chariali town. The protesters also burnt effigies of the state BJP leaders.

Pragyan Saikia, president of Biswanath College Students’ Union and Wasim Ahmed were arrested by police on Friday for their alleged involvement in the destruction of public properties during the ongoing agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Earlier, the Biswanath Chariali unit of AASU strongly condemned the arrest of the student leaders and termed it as a conspiracy hatched by the ruling party to crush the agitation. The student body also demanded early release of the students.
