Bihu celebration at Sonaram playground
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI, Jan 15 – Reinforcing fellow feeling and camaraderie, a large number of people from west Guwahati came together to celebrate Magh Bihu at Sonaram HS School playground yesterday. Those attending the event ceremoniously lit the Meji and took part in a host of other cultural programmes thereafter. The large Meji, nearly 30 feet tall, was lit in the morning in the presence of a large gathering. The occasion was marked by the presence of non-Assamese people who witnessed such a cultural event for the first time.

Organised by the Paschim Guwahati Nagarik Sojagota Mancha, the event witnessed the felicitation of several distinguished personalities of Guwahati. Those felicitated included Prof Abul Lais, Achala Das, Adyanath Chakraborty, Dinesh Barua, Dulal Roy, Ramesh Choudhury, Ashia Rosul, and Robin Dey. The organisers mentioned that the entire programme was sustained by support from the Assamese community of the neighbouring areas. “We did not go for any donation drive in order to ensure that the celebrations were rooted among the people,” said Ramendra Choudhury of the Mancha.
