Basketball academy inaugurated

 GUWAHATI, Jan 13 The much awaited North East Basketball Academy finally came into existence as the academy was formally inaugurated by veteran sportsperson Pulin Das in a function at the Assam Olympic Association office here this morning. The academy will use the Maligaon basketball courts and Sarusajai indoor stadium on rent basis apart from their own Hengerabari basketball court.

Mukut Medhi, secretary general of the academy, informed in the opening ceremony that initially they will select 10 boys and 10 girls for the residential camp while another 10 boys and 10 girls will have day boarding facilities. The players will be of in the age group of 14 to 18 years.

The academy has already selected two girls from Meghalaya, two boys and two girls from Tripura, one boy and a girl from Manipur, two boys from Mizoram and five boys and as many girls from the home State Assam. The organisers also have appointed Yolinda Hynniewta as coach for the girls while Mukut Medhi himself will be in charge of boys.

The chief coach of the academy will be Kenny Nutt from USA while national level coaches like S Subramanium, KK Sensuriya, Rajesh Patel and Ashok Rangeen will act as guest coaches. The major part of the fund for the academy will be provided by the Basketball Federation of India.

Vice chairman Bolin Bordoloi, adviser Dr Karuna Sagar Das were also present in the inaugural function. Dr DD Lapang, president of Meghalaya Basketball Association is the chairman of the academy.
