Craft gallery for handloom, handicraft products opened

GUWAHATI, Jan 12 - An exclusive craft gallery for ethnic handloom and handicraft products of the eight north-eastern states was inaugurated today at NEDFi House here jointly by Naveen Verma, Secretary, Ministry of DoNER and Dr Inder Jit Singh, OSD, Ministry of DoNER, stated a press release.

Apart from traditional wraparounds, jackets, shawls and cane and bamboo items of various tribes of the region, the craft gallery provides an opportunity to the customers to procure NEDFi promoted water hyacinth craft products and banana fibre stoles.

Ram Muivah, Secretary, NEC launched the newly developed cardamom fibre mats during the inauguration of the craft gallery.

Large cardamom is a spice cultivated in the states of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. As a part of the inter-culture operation, the matured stems are removed annually to pave way for the new shoots. Similarly, the diseased plants are also removed from the plantation areas. These discarded stems can be processed for its use in craft activities.

It is expected that craftspersons belonging to these hill states will be able to use such raw materials to produce eco-friendly craft products which have demand in the market.

The craft gallery will be managed by NE-SHILP, a NEDFi promoted society, in order to facilitate market linkage to the craft producers of the region, the release added.
