Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, Jan 12 - Ahead of the Bhogali Bihu celebration, ‘Bhogali Chora’ was held on the Noonmati premises of the Assam Jatiya Bidyalay here today.

The Bidyalay said in a press release here this evening that a large number of students and guardians along with teachers and office staff of the school, were present on the occasion. The main objective of the ‘Bhogali Chora’ was to acquaint the students with the traditions related to Bhogali Bihu.
On the occasion, a traditional meji, built with hay and bamboo, was burnt at the beginning. After that the traditional ritual naam prasanga was performed and a sarai with maah-prasad was placed in front of the meji. This was followed by a cultural programme on the open stage. Some teachers, guardians and students spoke about the traditions related to Bhogali Bihu, sang Bihugeet and performed Bihu dance.
Egg fight, a traditional festive game was played by the teachers and students. At the end, maah- prasad, the Assamese traditional offering to God, was distributed. The convenor of the ‘Bhogali Chora’ programme was Simanta Kalita, librarian of the school, the release said.
Celebration at Nilachal Jatiya Vidyalaya: A pre-Bhogali Bihu celebration was also held at Nilachal Jatiya Vidyalaya here today.
The programme started with a speech by Principal Rajib Kalita about the significance of Bhogali Bihu. After that management committee president Bhupendra Kumar Sarma delivered a lecture about the celebrations of Bhogali Bihu in villages.
Parmesh Malakar, a guardian of one of the students, performed traditional ‘Bihu jujona’ and the meji was burnt.
The teachers and students of the school together performed Bihu dance in the event.
