Lifer to youth for raping minor

 JORHAT, Jan 11 - The Jorhat District and Sessions Judge VK Chandak in the capacity as Special Judge on Thursday sentenced a youth to rigorous imprisonment for life after convicting him of raping a minor.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Sanjib Mahili, a resident of Meleng Tea Estate under Teok Police Station.

The judge convicted Mahili under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.

As per case records, the convict met the minor when she was reportedly going to school in the morning and took her to his home to offer her a glass of water on May 6, 2015 and committed the crime.

In all 11 witnesses were examined during the trial by the court. The judge in the judgement directed the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority of Jorhat to pay adequate compensation to the parents of the victim to provide restorative and compensatory justice to her.
