GUWAHATI, Jan 11 - The Gauhati High Court today granted interim anticipatory bail to intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain and KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi against whom the police had registered a case slapping sedition charges.
Journalist Manjit Mahanta has been given ‘absolute bail’ in the case.
Hearing the petition filed by the counsels of Dr Gohain, the court has called for the case diary on January 22.
The sedition case was registered against Dr Hiren Gohain, journalist Manjit Mahanta and KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, who have been speaking out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
A suo moto case was registered at the Latasil Police Station against the trio under Sections 120(B)/121/123/124(A) of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly making ‘objectionable’ comments at a function held on January 7.
Section 121 relates to waging or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war against the Government.
Meanwhile, protests against the police action continued today. The CPI staged a demonstration in the city, demanding withdrawal of the police case against Dr Gohain and others.
