GUWAHATI, Jan 11 - The old Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra here will be closed for vehicular traffic between 9.30 a.m. and 12 noon tomorrow for carrying out specialised repair works.
The exercise will be undertaken by the Bridges Department of the Northeast Frontier Railway. NFR and the NHAI are responsible for maintenance of the bridge.
Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR told this newspaper that during the exercise the bearings of the bridge would be changed.
“The girders of the bridge will have to be lifted a bit to create working space. It is a highly specialised job for which our top-level staff will be deployed,” said Sharma.
Traffic across the river will be diverted via by the new Saraighat Bridge tomorrow morning and local officials warned that there is likelihood of heavy jams in the locality due to that reason.
