JORHAT, Jan 10 - The 17th edition of Assam Mahotsav will be held from January 16 to 29 at the Jorhat District Sports Association field here.

An office-bearer of Intandem, the organisation that hosts the event, said that the festival which has by now become an annual event, has been providing a platform to ethnic groups to showcase their culture, food and traditions. This time too, it will continue with the trend following participation by several such communities.

This time Chutia, Sonowal Kachari, tea tribes and the Tai Khamyangs with their unique Buddhist traditions will be putting up stalls to showcase their exquisite culture, customs and traditional cuisines, the office-bearer of Intandem informed.

A performance on Raati Bihu, a tradition which seems to be less observed in recent times, besides a workshop on how to craft jewellery and other items from coconut husk and bamboo will also be included among other attractions at the Mahotsav.

On January 27, a demonstration on how water can be made free of arsenic and iron by a process which is extremely cheap will be held, the office-bearer said.

The fair will be having 120 stalls with an altogether separate part for indigenous handicraft and handloom of the different tribes of Assam, he said.

Several artistes, sports coaches and artisans will be felicitated at the cultural fair and there will be competitions in cooking, ethnic wear, drawing and modern songs, among others, the office-bearer stated.
