GUWAHATI, Jan 10 - A sedition case was registered against intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain, journalist Manjit Mahanta and KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, who have been voicing out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Latasil police station registered a suo motu case (15/19) against the trio under Sections 120(B) /121/123/124(A) of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly making ‘objectionable’ comments at a function held on January 7.
Section 121 relates to waging or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war against the government.
The first information report (FIR) was filed by Latasil police station officer in-charge Upen Kalita and the case will be investigated by sub-inspector Diganta Borah.
Police sources said the case has been registered based on the video footage gathered from the function, where many leading citizens of the State expressed their angst against the Bill.
City Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar, when contacted, told The Assam Tribune that the case has been registered based on statements made by the accused at the function. “We are investigating the case,” the Police Commissioner said.
Meanwhile, East Police district has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in areas under Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha and Hatigaon police stations, prohibiting assembly of five or more persons.
