DHUBRI, Jan 10 - In a bid to make the footpaths and roads free for pedestrians, the administration with the help of Dhubri Municipality has carried out a massive eviction drive.
The eviction drive that started on Friday cleared almost 250 illegal establishments and building extensions throughout the town. The sources in the administration informed that they evicted illegal establishments mainly in GTB Road, NS Road, Zakir Hussain Road, New Market area, Chagolhatti area, Nuniyapatty area and Jogomaya Ghat areas.
Sources also informed that most of these evicted establishments are shops in the market areas of the town.
While talking to this correspondent, the in-charge of the drive, Gayan Chandra Rajak said that the main aim of the drive was to make the roads free of encroachment to make enough space for pedestrians and for parking of vehicles.
“We have been carrying out such drives regularly but since Friday we have made these drives more stringent because of the complaints from many individuals and organisations,” said Rajak. He also added, “Since Friday, we have evicted more than 250 establishments throughout the town area to make the footpaths free, the roads and drains clear and provide ample space for the upcoming road repairing and maintenance works throughout the town.”
The officer-in-charge of the eviction also said that due to these illegal establishments, the drainage system of the town has been significantly affected. “The Municipality faces immense problems while clearing the drains full of filth and waste mainly created by these illegal establishments. In many palaces, these establishments put up their stalls covering the drains due to which drainage is hindered causing flash flood after a brisk shower,” said Rajak and added, “Moreover, if the roads are cleared then the ensuing road repairing activities will be done in a proper way.”
However, the people who have affected by the eviction drive said that they were not warned before the eviction drive. Many also demanded a proper alternative to put up their stalls that were evicted by the administration.
