Bhairabkunda festival gets under way

 UDALGURI, Jan 9 - The 7th Bhairabkunda tourism festival sponsored by the Tourism department of the BTC at the picturesque tri-junction of Bhairabkunda got under way yesterday and will continue till January 12. The festival will see the participation of people from Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan besides people from the north-eastern States. The festival is aimed at wooing domestic and foreign tourists to the area. It may be mentioned here that during the past several years, tourism sector has received a shot in the arm due to improved infrastructure, coupled with proper marketing.

The festival began with a half marathon followed by hoisting of the festival flag by Rihon Daimari, State PHE minister and president of the festival celebration committee. The ceremony was also attended by Dilip Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district, Charan Boro, MLA of Mazbat LAC and senior citizens.

A series of programmes have been lined up, including traditional folk dances of the indigenous people, sports, quiz and art competitions, women’s kabbadi, fashion show, body building contest, among others.

The festival will also be graced by noted singer Kalpana Patowary, singer Priyanka Bharali, Russian fire jugglers and dancers, celebrity anchor Yankee Parashar, among others.

The celebration committee members felt that Bhairabkunda festival will reflect the age-old bond of unity and integrity among the diverse ethnic linguistic groups including those from neighbouring Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh and its mission is to give an exposure to the tourism prospects, self-employment opportunities for the educated unemployed youths. To make the festival more attractive, new programmes, including helicopter joy ride, para gliding, jeep safari, elephant safari, river rafting, shooting and a food exhibition have been included.
