Migratory birds flock water bodies at Yaralpat|
IMPHAL, Jan 8 - Yaralpat, an important wetland in Imphal East district located about 9 km from here, has been flocked by migratory birds from far away places of the globe.
In the past, Yaralpat was known for the kombirei (Manipuri iris) flowers, but these flowers vanished after the wetland was converted into agricultural fields due to human pressure.
But some people took the initiative to develop a couple of water bodies with the support of the State Environment Department for pisciculture. These water bodies have now been attracting migratory birds in large numbers. Some of these avian species have taken to roosting on the hill ranges on the eastern side of the wetland, T Janaki Singh, general secretary of Yaralpat Integrated Farming Cooperative Society Ltd said.
