Call to withdraw Citizenship Bill
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - The Asom Andolan Sangrami Manch has reiterated its demand for withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment Bill) 2016 and called for total implementation of the Assam Accord through legislative and constitutional amendment for protection of the ethnic people of Assam.

According to chief adviser to the Manch and former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the attempt by the Centre to extend legal protection to foreign nationals on the ground of religious persecution will frustrate the very purpose of the Assam Accord.

“Assam has taken the burden of illegal infiltrators at the cost of its economy and in the face of loss of fertile land and employment crisis. It cannot take any additional burden and we insist that Clause 6 of the Assam Accord be implemented in letter and spirit,” said Mahanta, pointing out that the intention of the Centre has dealt a blow to the cause of the Assam Movement and sentiment of the people of Assam.

He regretted that non-implementation of the provisions of the Assam Accord in the true spirit has encouraged infiltration till date and insisted that the process of NRC update be expedited to secure the interests of the State and its indigenous people.
