SHILLONG, Jan 6 - BJP president Amit Shah today termed the Congress Government in Meghalaya as the “most corrupt government” and said development funds meant for the people have been “pocketed by Congress workers and Ministers.”

“There shouldn’t be…but if ever there is a competition held for the most corrupt Government, the Congress Government in Meghalaya would bag the prize,” Shah, who was here to inaugurate the party’s office at Oakland, said.

The BJP chief said Meghalaya was awarded Rs 24,413 crore from the 14th Finance Commission and another Rs 31,000 crore plus as grant totaling Rs 56,000 crore in the past five years.

“Funds meant for the development of the State have gone to Congress workers and Ministers, it didn’t percolate to the poor and needy. Therefore, the State has not witnessed any development under the 15 years of Congress rule in Meghalaya,” Shah said.

Tura Correspondent adds: Shah today tore into the Mukul Sangma-led Congress Government in the State over the alleged mismanagement of over Rs 25,000 crore provided to the State under the 14th Finance Commission.

Addressing a poll rally in Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills which saw a big crowd of over 20,000, Shah asked, “Ask Mukul, what has he done with over Rs 25,000 crore funds, which were meant for the development of the State.

According to Shah, during the reign of the Congress at the Centre, the State was provided only Rs 5,817 cr by the 13th Finance Commission but during Modi’s rule, the 14th Finance Commission gave Rs 25413 cr to Meghalaya.

He asked the people to question Mukul and the Congress Government and make them accountable for the large scale corruption, which has hindered development.

“Strengthen Modi and BJP in the upcoming election and we promise to give Meghalaya an accelerated growth and development. We will make a model State for development if given the mandate in the coming elections,” he stated.

“Government of India is asking for project completion certificate but Meghalaya has failed to give it as they have done nothing and have engaged themselves in loot and corruption,” he alleged.

He also asked the electorate not to fall prey to the Congress misinformation campaign that BJP is anti-Christian and anti-minorities. He repeatedly made a scathing attack on Mukul asking the people to wipe out Congress from Meghalaya.

Earlier, Union Minister KJ Alphonse too continued the tirade against the Congress Government in the State. “The Meghalaya Government is not for the people. If it were, where are the schools, hospitals and infrastructure? Why does it take four hours to travel 40 kms? Where is the development,” he asked.
