2 Pobitora rhinos to be translocated to Manas
Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 6 Two rhinos will be translocated from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas National Park between January 8 and 9, as part of the Indian Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020 project. The chosen animals are likely to be young females, which will be moved by road transport supervised by forest department, an official stated.

During the period of the operation the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary will remain closed to visitors as it involves a degree of risk to people in the vicinity. The entire operation will be carried out under strict vigil and only authorized personnel will be present.

Logistics needed for the complex operation will start arriving at Pobitora from January 8, and several dozen forest personnel will be involved. The operation will be overseen by senior Forest Department officials, including the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) SP Singh.

The IRV 2020 aims to attain a rhino population of 3,000 in seven Protected Areas (PA) of Assam by the year 2020. Seven PAs have been selected as the habitat of the rhinos in both the North and South banks of the Brahmaputra.
