Kamal Kumari awards announced

 GUWAHATI, Jan 6 The Kamal Kumari National Award for Art and Culture, and for Science and Technology has been conferred on Professor Amaresh Datta and Professor Ramesh Chandra Deka. The Siva Prasad Barooah National Award for journalism has been given to Subir Bhowmik.

The presentation ceremony of the Kamal Kumari Awards for the year 2010 would be held at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati on January 8, 2012 at 6 pm.

Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury will grace the occasion as the chief guest and Victor Bannerjee would be the guest of honour. The renowned Tanusree Shankar Ballet troupe would perform after the presentation of the awards.

The Kamal Kumari Foundation was set up in the memory of Kamal Kumari Barooah, matriarch of the Khongiya Barooah family of Thengal. Instituted in 1990, the Kamal Kumari awards seek to promote excellence in the field of science and technology and cultural pursuits. The awards acknowledge and honour those who have excelled in their respective fields.

In 1999, the foundation instituted the Siva Prasad Barooah National Award for Journalism in memory of the renowned planter, philanthropist, politician, humanist and publisher of Batori, the first daily newspaper in Assam, to promote news media excellence.

Since 2006, the value of he awards has been enhanced to Rs 2 lakh in cash, apart from a trophy and a citation.

In the field of art and culture eminent personalities like Sobha Brahma, Sankha Ghosh, Nilmoni Phookan, Mamoni Raisom Goswami among others have been given this award. CNR Rao, SP Tyagrajan, Sarbeswar Bujarbarua, Dilip Kumar Choudhury etc., are the recipients of the same award in the field of science and technology. In journalism, The Assam Tribune, Sanjoy Hazarika, DN Bezboruah, Teesta Setalvad, Pranoy Roy among others have won the award.
