GUWAHATI, Jan 5 – Noted actor Tapan Das was honoured today with the Rupkar Award for his contribution to the cultural scenario in the State. The award presentation ceremony was held at the Guwahati Press Club here.
The Rupkar Award has been instituted in memory of Pabitra Kumar Deka, distinguished film critic and journalist who died in 2010. The award carries Rs 25,000, a memento and a certificate. Playwright Arun Sarma presented the award to Das.
Tapan Das has played major roles in many Assamese films and also delighted theatre-lovers with his performances. Acknowledging the honour, Das said that Pabitra Kumar Deka had enriched critical writings in the State and showed the way to aspiring critics.
“I’m honoured to receive this award. He always encouraged the youngsters,” said the veteran actor who also pursues literary interests.
Das started his acting career in the early 1980s when he was studying in high school. By dint of his hard work and acting skills, he succeeded in securing a firm footing on the silver screen. His acting in plays like Maharaja, Karengar Ligiri, Keligula, Xulla Januarir Nixa, Kukurnesia Manuh and Putola Ghor earned him accolades from viewers and critics alike. He made his film debut in the Pulak Gogoi-directed Sendur in 1984. So far he has acted in more than 20 films and won several awards.
Das has also penned several short stories which have been received well. The function was attended by many eminent citizens including Ratna Ojah and Udayaditya Bharali.
