Campaign for enrolment in Manipuri medium
SILCHAR, Jan 4 – Concerned with the dropping number of students in Manipuri medium, which has resulted in the closure of many schools of the vernacular medium, the Unemployed Manipuri TET Forum (UMTF) has undertaken a door-to-door awareness campaign to encourage the parents of Lakhipur to send their children to Manipuri-medium schools. Dema Khan, president of the forum said that the decline of school goers to Manipuri-medium schools is mainly because guardians tend to send their children to English-medium schools or some private institutes.

Maniton Singha, vice president of the forum said “we started this campaign from December 23 and are going to every home in Lakhipur. Gradually, we will reach out to every guardian and try to convince them to send their children to Manipuri-medium schools”.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Manipuri Students Union (AAMSU) has extended cooperation to this initiative. Y Molina Devi, president of the union said that earlier they had organised a workshop on the same issue to motivate the parents. “We support this campaign,” Devi said.
