Firing incident at Khumtai: 4 picked up
DERGAON, Jan 3 - Four persons were picked up by the Golaghat police for interrogation in connection with the firing on a vehicle at Habial under Dhekial police out post in Golaghat district last night.

The SP Golaghat Pushpraj Singh told this correspondent that he himself had been investigating the incident and clues had also been gathered.

“Four persons have been picked up on suspicion and interrogation is going on. Some others have also been identified and will be picked up for interrogation if needed,” the SP said.

He also said that the black Mahindra Thar vehicle allegedly used in the firing had also been seized.

According to the police, the Maruti Van (AS-05-H-6926) was damaged in the firing as unidentified miscreants opened fire on the vehicle parked in front of Pranjal Rajkhowa’s house at Habial village at around 9.30 pm last night.

The owner of the vehicle Biman Baruah had just got down from the vehicle and entered Pranjal’s residence.

Later, Pranjal who is the husband of the president of Dhekial Gaon Panchayat Rupa Hazarika Rajkhowa, informed police over the phone and local police as well as the higher officials including the SP rushed to the spot. Police recovered seven rounds of cartridges from the spot.

The local residents termed the incident as planned by someone to resist the ongoing protests against CAA in the area. It may be mentioned that Pranjal and Binoy had organised a protest meeting in the area on Thursday. However, the SP declined to say anything about the motive of the incident as the investigations were at a preliminary stage.

On the other hand, the residents blocked the PHCG Road at Ganakpukhuri Tiniali and demanded immediate arrest of Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia. They also burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister to mark their protest.
