GUWAHATI, Jan 3 - The 3rd annual general meeting of Rukminigaon Jyestha Nagarik Sanmilan, a branch of the Assam Jyestha Nagarik Sanmilan was held recently on the premises of Rukminigaon Mahila Sangha, said a press release today.
The Sanmilan’s flag was hoisted by Mahim Chandra Deka, president of the organisation. A photo exhibition held on the occasion was inaugurated by Dr Nirmal Kumar Choudhury, former VC of the Gauhati University and adviser to the Sanmilan. A borgeet was rendered by Bina Bora, life member of the Sanmilan. Aruna Mazumder welcomed the guests and the members.
Jugabrata Dutta, writer, social activist and trustee of Asom Kesori Ambikagiri Roychoudhary Memorial Trust of ‘Amar Ghar’ declared open the meeting with a lucid speech touching upon the problems afflicting society and called upon the senior citizens to disseminate their noble experiences among the children by organising workshops and speeches by eminent scholars and social scientists for building a seamless society of high moral value.
The annual report of the Sanmilan was read out by Jojneswar Gogoi, general secretary.
Dr Devdas Kakati, distinguished physicist, academician and former VC of the Dibrugarh University, who was the chief guest, dwelt upon the boon of science and technology such as smartphones and GPS and called upon senior citizens to abridge the generation gap by familiarising themselves with the modern technology.
Bhola Nath Hazarika, an octogenarian and founder life member of the Sanmilan, expressed his dismay over the indifferent attitude of the local GMC office on Swachh Bharat and requested the Sanmilan to look into the matter. The meeting was addressed by Pulin Ch Goswami, adviser to the Sanmilan and senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court, Dr Pratap Ch Sarma, Jadu Nandan Neog, and Kinaram Das. Self-composed poems were recited by Aruna Mazumder, Kularanjan Das and Jojneswar Gogoi.
