DERGAON, Jan 2 - In what can be termed as good news for the residents of undivided Sivasagar district, the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary and two other topics have been included in the textbook of elementary education under Assam’s Education Department.
Among the 552 historic places of the district, the bird sanctuary has been mentioned in the textbook of Class 8 from the new academic session.
The textbook ‘Sunbeam English Reader’ prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Assam, under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) starts with the lesson ‘The Princess of Panidihing’. It tells the story of the recovery of a girl from a boat in floods inside the Panidihing Reserve Forest. The lesson speaks a lot about the forest which will shape the minds of children regarding environment protection.
In another chapter, ‘Dokchory learns about Panchayat’ in the same textbook, a premier school of the district – Disangmukh Janajati High School – is mentioned in an imaginative story. In the story, Kongke Mili, the father of Dokchory, carries her to school on a bicycle, and while replying to her questions, he explains vividly the aims, objectives and activities of a Panchayat.
