GUWAHATI, Jan 2 – The Assam orthodox tea has the potential to emerge as the leading brand in the global market with its unique taste and flavour. No other region of the world makes the Tippy orthodox tea that is produced in Assam. The Tippy orthodox tea produced in Assam is considered to be the best orthodox tea so far as quality is concerned.
Tea industry sources here said the Assam Government is keen on promoting the orthodox tea of the State. In the ASEAN-India Trade Conclave held here recently, the State Government promoted Assam tea vigorously. The much publicised slogan of the trade conclave was - ‘Retaining its supremacy of producing Crush-Tear-Curl (CTC) tea, Assam also produces finest orthodox, green and organic teas’.
The VIPs including the foreign dignitaries present at the conclave were served with the tea prepared from Assam Tippy orthodox produced by the Mahadeobari TE.
The liquors of Assam orthodox tea have a rare combination of flavour and strength.
In the global tea production, the shares of CTC, orthodox and green teas are 38 per cent, 31 per cent and 31 per cent respectively. But, in terms of demand, orthodox has 45 per cent share in the world tea market, while CTC has a demand of 41 per cent and green tea has a demand of 14 per cent.
In Assam, orthodox tea has a share of 10 per cent in the total tea produced by the State. In the global arena, Sri Lanka is also a major orthodox tea producing country.
It needs mention here that the Satrupa Tea Factory belonging to the Kunapathar TE of Late Mridul Bhattacharyya used to export orthodox and organic teas.
