Cong leader assaulted at poll meet

 TEZPUR, Jan 2 – Veteran Congress leader and former Dhekiajuli MLA Hiranya Borah was physically assaulted by a section of Congress leaders from Sootea LAC following differences among the party leaders over Panchayat poll-related matters.

Borah was physically assaulted during a scuffle by ex-MLA of Sootea LAC Praneswar Basumatary and Sootea Youth Congress president Pranjit Bhuyan at Hotel Royal Regency here today.

It is to be stated that when a Panchayat poll-related meeting was going on at the said hotel in presence of Barchala MLA, Tanka Bahadur Rai, District Congress president Nurjamal Sarkar, Tezpur MLA Rajen Borthakur, ex-Education Minister Ripun Bora, Dhekiajuli MLA Habul Chakrabarty, senior Congress leader Hiranya Borah arrived at the hotel with some of his supporters including State NSUI secretary Partha Pratim Borah and following differences over some matters he got involved in a scuffle with Basumatary resulting in he being assaulted by the Praneswar Basumatary supporters.

While reacting to the incident Borah alleged that Basumatary along with the Youth Congress president of Sootia LAC Pranjit Bhuyan physically assaulted him. “Basumatary even threatened me to face dire consequences,’ he further alleged.

Borah said that both of them tried to pull him down but he was saved by his PSOs and paramilitary forces engaged there, adding that both of his PSOs were injured in the tussle.

It is to be mentioned that the Congress leaders from the district Assembled here to finalize party candidates for the district council polls in Sonitpur. The conflict between both the leaders originated since the last Assembly elections. Hiranya Borah, Congress candidate for Sootia LAC alleged that ex -MLA Praneswar Basumatary’s dissidence was one of the reasons for his defeat in the elections.

Meanwhile, police said that a case vide 4/13 US 341/353/325/307/34 IPC has been registered against Praneswar Basumatary and Pranjit Huyan.
