Presence of policewomen to be strengthened
GUWAHATI, Jan 2 – Following intensifying public outcry over safety of women on the streets, police have now decided to improve the presence of policewomen in Guwahati and as part of this already 300 woman police personnel have been deployed. Senior Superintendent of Police (City) AP Tiwari told The Assam Tribune that the woman police personnel would act in tandem with their male counterparts and they have been deployed even for traffic management.

“It is not just about ensuring safety and security to the fair sex but also infusing the sense of confidence in the minds of women,” the SSP said.

He also informed that the deployment of Birangana (woman commando force) within the next two months would add teeth to the security arrangements in Guwahati.

Asked, he said the process of close circuit television cameras should be over by March.

Meanwhile, district administration would soon launch a joint sensitization programme in collaboration with City Police and State Women Commission in various colleges in Guwahati.

“The programme would begin soon and the roadmap is being chalked out to cater to the female students in an effective manner,” said Ashutosh Agnihotri, DC, Kamrup (Metro). He also said the department concerned has been asked to ensure proper functioning of streetlights in the city so that wrongdoers cannot take advantage of the darkness.
