IMPHAL, Feb 24 – Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat will flag off the 1st North East India Top of the World (Mt Everest) Expedition 2013 during a function at Kangla Uttra Mamang at the historic Kangla fort in Imphal tomorrow.The state Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Chef De Mission DS Poonia, Chief Secretary of Manipur will also attend the flagging off ceremony of the first ever combined climbing expedition by 16 climbers from six north east states to Top of the World-Mount Everest.
The expedition is being funded by the North Eastern Council, Shillong through the Manipur planning department and to be implemented by the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA).
The expedition is likely to make the historic summit between May 13 and 21. The expedition includes Anshu Jamsenpa, the first lady from Arunachal Pradesh who has scaled Mt Everest twice, and the youngest Manipuri climber N Chingkheinganba, a 15-year-old schoolboy.
Other mountaineers of the team which include Nima Lama (Arunachal Pradesh), Tarun Saikia and Manish Kumar Deka (Assam), Kazi Sherpa and Anand Gurung (Sikkim), Wangsuk Myrthong (Meghalaya), David Zohmangaiha and Vanlalliana (Mizoram), Puyamcha Mohon, Athokpam Robert, N Bidyapati Devi, Maibam Shantra and Dr Nelson (Manipur) will undergone the final seasoning and team formation at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi.
