GUWAHATI, Feb 23 – The 7th Singhapurush Radha Govinda Baruah Memorial Full Length Drama Festival was inaugurated today by Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya at the Rabindra Bhawan by lighting of the ceremonial lamp.

Recollecting the contributions of one of the architects of modern Assam RG Baruah, Bhattacharya said that the stalwart has been a wonder for him. “I was always awestruck by the multifaceted personality of RG Baruah who enriched different aspects of socio-cultural life of the state with his creative ideas and initiatives,” reminisced Bhattacharya adding that he felt it an honour to inaugurate this festival dedicated to the memory of the illustrious son of the soil.

PG Baruah, editor of The Assam Tribune, and also the president of Jyotirupa extended a warm felicitation to Bhattacharya.

Earlier, welcoming the audience, general secretary of Jyotirupa Naren Hazarika said that this festival is a humble effort to popularize among the masses the lesser known activities of RG Baruah like his leaning towards theatre. Hazarika mentioned that not many people are aware of the stalwart’s close relation with theatre. “Jyotirupa hopes to inspire people to discover the lesser known aspects of RG Baruah’s personality,” said Hazarika.

Floral tribute was paid before the portrait of RG Baruah by the dignitaries.

The five-day festival began with presentation of Dahan and Hahir Aarar Banhi. It needs to be mentioned here that these two plays had won prizes at the 36th Jyotirupa North East One Act Play Competition.

Dahan, scripted and directed by Kishore Tahbildar highlighted the degradation in the society and its impact on the younger generation. Hahir Aarar Banhi scripted and directed by Mrinal Kumar Borah, on the other hand, portrayed the struggle in the life of upcoming artistes who embrace all the challenges with a smile.

Every day the show will begin at 6 pm.
