GUWAHATI, Feb 22 - In tune with the nationwide rollout of the phase II capacity building programme for elected women representatives (EWRs) of Panchayati Raj institutions, the first capacity building programme in the State concluded today in the conference hall of the Zila Parishad, said a statement issued by the district administration.

This three-day intensive programme started on February 20 where women gaon panchayat members and residents were given training on issues like women and child laws, child protection, empowering women in PRI, financial literacy, online safety, SHGs, road construction, know your village, administration, etc.

“The objective of the programme is to develop the EWRs as change agents and improve their leadership qualities and management skills for better implementation of various programmes of the government. Another objective is to empower the EWRs by developing leadership capacities so that they serve as catalysts for social change and function as peer facilitators in the field, become vocal for their rights and participate effectively in the governance processes,” the statement added.

According to the statement, this capacity building programme is being implemented by AMS in association with NIPCCD (organisation of Ministry of Women and Child Development) in 33 districts of Assam and will be completed in March 2019.

“A lot of support has been received from the offices of Commissioner of Panchayat and Rural Development, Assam, Zila Parishad and gaon panchayats in this regard. In Assam, 1,485 EWRs will benefit from this initiative,” said the Regional Manager (Knowledge Services) NE of AMS, adding, “in Phase-II, 18 States of India have been included for the capacity building programmes for EWRs.”
