DIBRUGARH, Feb 20 - Two child marriages were averted in Tinsukia town today after Childline volunteers acted swiftly following a tip off from a conscious citizen.
The Childline office was informed at the toll free number 1098 that a child marriage was going to be solemnised today. The Childline, Tinsukia made inquiries and gathered that two minor children residing at Parbatiya within Tinsukia town were indeed getting married today and pandals were erected for the purpose.
Childine immediately conveyed the matter to the district’s Child Marriage Prohibition Officer and the Tinsukia Police. A joint team later visited Parbatiya and raided the parental residence of the twin girls (17) who were about to be given away in marriage.
Later with the help of the family members of the twin girls, the team located the grooms. Both the grooms who were 22 years and 29 years old hailed from Bhojo, near Sonari town in Charaideo district. The two girls were rescued and the Child Welfare Committee, Tinsukia has ordered their temporary shelter at a Child Care Institution in the district.
Childline sources informed The Assam Tribune that the Tinsukia’s Child Marriage Prohibition Officer would initially lodge an FIR with the police against the grooms and further legal proceedings would follow.
