GUWAHATI, Feb 20 - Nearly 40 street vendors were evicted during a drive against ‘unauthorised’ street vendors at Bhangagarh near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) today.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out the drive against the vendors who were allegedly littering in and around GMCH. They were also involved in blocking the streets, causing noticeable traffic congestion in the area.
GMC Commissioner Debeswar Malakar said that the eviction was carried out as per the court orders.
“They have been served notice to evict the place several times and the people evicted were occupying the area illegally,” Malakar added.
There are 7,000 vendors registered with the GMC.
A vendor, who has been doing business in the area for a very long time, said that following the eviction drive they are left with no other livelihood option.
“They came and destroyed our property without any prior notice,” he added.
GMC also carried out a drive in front of Cotton University on Thursday. However, the students of the university protested and did not allow the police to carry out the drive.
