Corruption in MGNREGA implementation alleged
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Feb 20 - AIUDF legislator Mamun Imdadul Haque Chawdhury today alleged that the MGNREGA scheme is plagued by various ills, including corruption and mismanagement.

Taking part in the discussion on the Voting on Demands for Grants of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in the Legislative Assembly, Chawdhury said many BDOs and panchayat secretaries embezzle money in the name of undertaking works under the MGNREGA. “I am saying this on record. There is a massive scam going on,” he maintained.

Chawdhury said the current wage of Rs 182 per day given under the MGNREGA in Assam is not adequate. He said that while the State government cannot change the rules governing the MGNREGA, it should nevertheless send a proposal to the Centre to increase the daily remuneration.

The MLA alleged that while the MGNREGA should provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per household in a financial year in rural areas, in Assam the provision is not implemented.

He urged the government to pressurise the Centre to raise the limit to 200 days and ensure that households get work for the stipulated number of days in practice.

Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque said there are shortcomings in the Panchayat Act. Ashok Singhal of BJP alleged that a lot of corruption and mismanagement in implementation of Panchayat and Rural Development schemes took place during the Congress rule.
