Transgenders march for their rights
CITY CORRESPONDENT
GUWAHATI, Feb 17 - The transgender community of Assam under the aegis of the All Assam Transgender Association (AATA) today carried out a march from Dighalipukhuri to the Guwahati Club area in support of their various demands.

According to the organiser, their main demands include immediate redrafting of the draft state policy on transgender and inclusion of transgender people in the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

The AATA, which recently moved Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma over the draft state policy on transgenders, alleged that the policy has come up with a ‘draconian’ definition of the ‘transgender’ which not only violates the respect, dignity and prestige of the transgender but also the essence of NALSA judgment as well.

After the move, the State government has decided to organise a seminar here soon to take opinions from various stakeholders to formulate a suitable policy for the transgenders in the State.

On the other hand, in response to a petition filed by Swati Bidhan Barua, a transgender activist, the Gauhati High Court has recently directed the Centre to file an affidavit stating whether the transgender community has been excluded from the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Other respondents in the case have also been directed to file affidavits, clarifying their stand on the complaint.
