CBI grilling of Kolkata Police chief continues for fourth day
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
SHILLONG, Feb 12 - The CBI today grilled Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar at its office here for the fourth day in a row. The Saradha Group CMD and his assistant, Debjani Mukherjee, are likely to be questioned next.

Though Kumar was questioned for the fourth straight day without any respite, official sources said that he had been evading questions relating to his alleged role in tampering with evidence in the probe into the Saradha chit fund scheme.

It is due to this that the CBI has been continuing its interrogation despite Kumar and his team’s insistence on returning to Kolkata, the sources added.

It may be mentioned here that the Saradha CMD and his assistant Mukherjee are currently in judicial custody. The CBI has to seek permission from the court to bring them here for interrogation. Both have been accused in the multi-crore-rupee scam, and trials in several of the cases are on.

Meanwhile, former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh has returned to Kolkata after his interrogation. He was made to sit face-to-face with Kumar and they were cross-examined by the CBI team.

Ghosh had earlier accused Kumar of tampering with evidence related to the Saradha chit fund scam while heading an investigating team. Before returning home, Ghosh termed Kumar’s interrogation and the cross-examination with him by the CBI as a moral victory.
