9TH MILE (RI-BHOI), Feb 11 - Four eminent and internationally acclaimed personalities from different fields ranging from education and entrepreneurship to industry and philanthropy have received Honorary D Litt and D Sc from University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) today at a Special Convocation ceremony held at Central Auditorium of USTM, a press release said.
Receiving the Honorary DSc, the USA-based entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, civic leader, and thought leader Frank Fakhrul Islam said that students are the promised potential of the world and that “the growth of USTM in less than a decade shows that the University will soon be an educational empowerment zone”.
The recipients of the Honorary D.Litt degrees include, UAE-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr PA Ibrahim Haji, eminent educationist from Shillong and former UPSC Chairman Prof David R Syiemlieh and Singapore-based entrepreneur and industrialist Sudip Dutta.
The degrees were conferred by Meghalaya Governor and Visitor, USTM, Tathagata Roy, in the presence of State Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui; Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM and Dr PK Goswami, Vice Chancellor, USTM.
Hailing from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Frank Islam currently heads the FI Investment Group, a private investment holding company that he established in 2007 after he sold his information technology firm, the QSS Group. He founded the QSS Group in 1994 with just one employee and built it to a more than 2,000 employee company with revenues of about $ 300 million before its sale.
Sudip Dutta, is the Founder and Chairman of Ess Dee Aluminium Ltd., India’s largest manufacturer of aluminium foil based packaging material. In 2009, Forbes India bestowed upon him the title of “The Wrapper Tycoon”. His entrepreneurial journey started in 1991 in Mumbai with 12 employees with a pouching unit for making sachets used for packing oral re-hydration powders by local pharmaceutical companies.
Dr PA Ibrahim shifted from Kerala to Muscat in 1971. After nine years of service in various business organisations in India, Dubai and Muscat, he started a garment retail business in Dubai in 1974. Today, Dr Ibrahim is the founder and Vice-Chairman of Indus Motors Company in India; chairman of the UAE-based Century International Travels; chairman of Gulf Asian English School (Sharjah), India International School (Kuwait), Managing Director of AL-Shamali Group in Garments and Textiles, etc.
