IMPHAL, Feb 10 - A people’s convention here has resolved to appeal to the general public to cease their daily activities to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (CAB).

The convention was held here under the aegis of the Peoples’Alliance Manipur, a conglomerate of various civil society organizations in Manipur, on Saturday.

The ceasing of all normal activities will be effected from 5 am of February 11 till 5 pm of February 12, according to reports. According to a resolution adopted in the meeting, protest demonstrations would be staged across the State against the Bill during the shut down.

The convention also decided to hold a hunger strike at 50 places against the Bill on February 13.

Meanwhile, normal life in Imphal city was affected for the second day on Sunday after the womenfolk and women vendors of the Ima Keithel in the State capital joined the mass agitation against the CAB.

Markets in Khwairamband Keithel areas wore a deserted look since early this morning.

However, the police prevented continuation of the sit-in demonstration, reports said.

Protest sit-ins and rallies were held at many parts of the State on Sunday. The mass agitation was launched on February 6 after an appeal made by Manipur People Against CAB, a common platform of 72 civil society organisations.

On Friday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the State Government will strongly oppose the CAB till a clause is inserted in it that Manipur will not be affected by it.
