GUWAHATI, Feb 10 – A class XI girl student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir sustained head and leg injuries and was rushed to the GNRC after she was hit by a trekker in Silpukhuri area this morning.
Agitated onlookers following the incident damaged the vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-AC-0208 and also assaulted the driver, Kirtish Das.
According to police, the incident took place when the driver of the trekker lost control over the vehicle after finding Ranjuta Chakraborty, the girl student, suddenly before the vehicle, which eventually led to the incident.
Police sources also informed that driver of the vehicle has been detained and has been sent for medical examination.
A section of the onlookers, though blamed the driver for the incident, a few others stated that the girl student was trying to cross the road flouting all the vehicular traffic norms.
Pradeep Pujari, Superintendent of Police (City Traffic), when asked to react on the incident, said that the matter is being investigated and that it would be difficult to put the blame on anyone at this moment.
He, however, stated that girl was reportedly talking over cell phone when the incident took place. On the spurt in accidents as a result of rash driving, the SP said that department has taken note of the trend and that it has taken a slew of measures to curb the lethal trend.
