BADARPUR, Feb 8 – The internal clash of the Congress party at the Badarpur LAC, in Karimganj district may benefit the non-Congress parties in the ensuing State Assembly election. Several non-Congress political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party are drawing up a strategy to wrest the Badarpur LAC seat from the Congress.
For a long period, an internal clash between two groups of the Congress namely, the ex-Congress minister Abu Saleh Najmuddin’s group and the ex-MLA Jamal Uddin Ahmed’s group is going on. Both the groups are now demanding the Congress tickets for contesting the election. An indication of the rift appeared in the Congress Gana Jagaran Yatra, held at Umarpur Sports Ground under Badarpur Police Station in the presence of top leaders of the party including State general secretary Chandan Sarkar and others.
In the meeting, the Abu Saleh Najmuddin and Jamal Uddin groups nearly clashed and the situation almost went out of control. There was slogan shouting and stonepelting. As a result, the police were compelled to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Mediapersons were also assaulted and injured in the incident. APCC general secretary Chandan Sarkar and others were taken aback at the affairs of the party in the Badarpur LAC.
Apart from these two groups of the Congress, another separate group of the party has also arisen. The Karimganj ZP president Mantaj Ali group is also flexing its muscles to get the Congress ticket. His group did not create any clash in the meeting though.
Various sections of people, leading citizens and intellectuals of Badarpur said that if clashes within the Congress party continue, it will surely taste defeat at Badarpur LAC. Luck may favour the BJP, TMC or AGP, although the BJP is on a strong wicket at this moment in Badarpur LAC. Besides Badarpur, the rift in the Congress party in the entire Karimganj district is also taking a serious turn. Congress sources however said that the party will put up a good show in all the LACs of the district.
