CPI(M) stages protest against Citizenship Bill
Correspondent
GOALPARA, Feb 5 - At the call of the CPI(M) central committee, a dharna was organised by the district unit of the CPI(M) in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office against the Citizenship Bill yesterday. In view of the growing resentment and dissatisfaction among the common people against the Bill, the CPI (M) appealed to the Government not to take further steps on the Bill. They also observed that as there is a strong protest from the people of Assam and other parts of the country, the Centre should reconsider its decision.

The party also criticized the BJP-led Government for trying to divide the people on the religious line and the Citizenship Bill which goes against the basic spirit of the Indian Constitution . Also, there is a total apprehension and fear that the Bill will not be able to protect the rights and culture of the indigenous people of the State. The CPI (M) also observed that the Bill would fail to prevent the influx of Bengali immigrants from Bangladesh in the near future.

A memorandum addressed to the Union Home Minister was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner demanding not to take any steps on the Bill.

Meanwhile, in a separate memorandum, the CPI (M) demanded a strong action against the BJP office bearer who misbehaved and verbally abused Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka .
