Abducted schoolchild rescued in late night operation

GUWAHATI, Feb 5 - In a dramatic late night operation, City Police today rescued five-year-old Manbik Surana from Bhaskarnagar of Fatasil-Ambari and arrested three persons for abducting the child from his school.

According to police sources, the arrested have been identified as Kewal More, his wife Rinti Bania and their associate Dipak Biswas.

Manbik, who is learnt to have been suffering from autism problem, was abducted from a play school, Kid Veda located at Shreenagar area of GS Road around 11: 30 this morning.

Manbik is the son of businessman Vikas Surana and Sudipa Surana, residents of Anandapur on GS Road. The main accused Kewal More was a former employee of the Surana family’s Nagaon-based business firm. Extortion was believed to be the motive behind the abduction, police said.

“Manbik was dropped at the school by his parents at around 9 in the morning,” family sources said.

The child’s school gets over by 12:30 pm and it is his mother who comes to pick him up daily. But an unknown person today took the child at around 11:30 am claiming to be his relative.

“He told the school authorities that Manbik’s parents had to go to Nagaon for some urgent work and he was sent to take the kid to Nagaon. In fact, he even made one of the caretakers of the school talk over phone to a lady who identified herself to be Manbik’s mother,” sources said.

The abduction came to light when Manbik’s mother went to pick the kid at around 12:30 pm. Parents of other children charged the school authorities with sheer negligence.

“Normally, if any other person comes to pick up any child, he or she has to show a card issued by the school authorities. In this case, the school authorities did not ask for the card. Moreover, there was no CCTV camera in the school,” a guardian said.

Police collected CCTV camera footage installed in nearby buildings, while checking was intensified in the entry and exit points of the city.
